The reverse sides feature beautifully inscribed Buddhist calligraphy in gold, including a clearly legible date: Meiji 14 (1881). In Japanese Buddhism, the Arhats—known locally as the Jūhachi Rakan—are deeply venerated as enlightened beings who have transcended the cycle of rebirth and remain in the world to safeguard the Dharma until the coming of the future Buddha, Miroku.
