Japanese Antique Woodblock Triptych of Sumo Wrestlers

DescriptionJapanese antique woodblock print in triptych entitled “A Picture of Yokozuna Entering the Ring” by Gyokuha Kiwani (active 1900-1920). The highest ranking sumo wrestler, the yokozuna is shown in the center flanked by two other wrestlers during the ring entering ceremony. The yokozuna is easily identified by the wide white rope he wears around his waist. The referee is seated to the right, holding a wide ceremonial fan. All three wrestlers wear matching aprons with the Tokugawa mon and waves. Framed.
