DescriptionJapanese antique futon cover with a design of Shochikubai, Three Friends of Winter; pine, bamboo and plum. Symbolizing the qualities of each: vitality of pine – evergreen even in the cold and snow; vigor of bamboo – growing with unstoppable strength; and plum – grace, beauty and anticipation of Spring. A kiri kamon (paulownia crest) in the lower right hand corner is a symbol associated with the imperial family, used by samurai clans and linked to government officials. The design is created using the tsutsugaki technique of tube-drawn paste resist and dyed indigo with lighter blue details.
